Hosea; What You Need To Know About His Family And Ministry

November 2, 2020 by ddmionline

Greetings to you all greatly beloved of God and welcome to another episode of our daily study of the Scriptures. We bless the name of the Lord God for the gift of life and for His benefits on us each new day. Praise be to God!

In our today’s episode 583, we shall be examining the Book of Hosea Chapter 1 titled:

Hosea; What You Need To Know About His Family And Ministry

Who was Prophet Hosea?

Looking at the Hebrew transliteration of the name Hosea, here is what you will see:

Hebrew Transliteration: hôshêa
Pronounced as: /ho-shay’-ah/

And it means to save, rescue or deliver.

In noun form, it means Salvation, rescue or deliverance.

He was son of Beeri, of the tribe of Issachar, born in Beth-shemesh [Jerome].

He was from the northern tribe of Israel. However, he also made some prophetic statements regarding southern Israel (aka Judah).

For example the first prophecy he made was about the overthrow of Jehu’s house, which was fulfilled on the death of Jeroboam, Jehu’s great-grandson. Please read 2Kings 15:12).

He also prophesied about Jeroboam’s son.

This first prophecy was during Jeroboam’s life, as Zachariah, his son, was meant to reign for six months making his predictions to be true.

This is why he started chapter 1 with the statement:

“[1]The word of the LORD that came unto Hosea, the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.” Hosea 1:1

Hosea was the first minor prophet in the canon arrangement.

He was called “minor” not because he was less important in the rank and authority of prophets, but because of the size of his writings or books, which was relatively short.

We must note that the chronological order of the book of minor prophets is different from the canonical order. Check this out:

  1. Joel, about 810 b.c.;
  2. Jonah, about 810 b.c. 3. Amos, about 790 b.c.; 4. Hosea, about 784 b.c.

Chronologically speaking, Hosea was in the fourth position, but was placed in the first in the canons or Bible arrangement probably because his message followed the same pattern with some other major prophets.

In fact, some Bible scholars opined that Hosea was a colleague to Isaiah, Micah and Amos.

In our next post by God’s grace, we will deal with chapter 1 in more details and then conclude it.

Stay tuned and stay blessed.

Let us Pray:
